Life as an immigrant

Let me introduce myself

31 Dec , 2015, 12.00 ammaralkaysi

I am Ammar, refugee from Iraq. I have a bachelor’s degree in Engineering of Electronics and communications. I worked in installing and maintaining x-ray scanning systems for more than 9 years with a very popular company. In addition, I have worked in preparing telecom sites (BTS sites) and assembling control and electrical distribution panels.

My hobbies are bodybuilding, hanging out with friends, calligraphy and traveling. I was an asylum seeker in Finland from 11th of July till 2nd of December in the past year (2015). During that period I was spending my time reading, doing exercise, studying Finnish language and engaging in the camp activities.

For sure there was some difficulties, one of them was waiting for the residence permit decision. The waiting made me sometimes feel as I entered through an entirely different new world and a dark area of lost and unknown future. However, now I feel happy and safe because I look at a vivid vision of my future.

From now I should start my new life from zero in this advanced country of highly educated people. I have to improve the ability in my specialization, language and qualifications, so the next step will be doing a master’s degree or learning Finnish (Suomi) to simplify communicating with the local people.

Here I will blog about what is happening to immigrants in Finland and about how to become integrated. Feel free to ask me questions.

Happy new year and best wishes for all.

One of the immigrants,

Ammar Al-Kaysi

Welcome to Finland. We are just like everybody else. Some are stupid, some are smart. Some are happy some are sad. Some speaks a lot and some are silent. Some are afraid of strangers the most of us are not.
Best wishes to you, your family and everybody else.

Thank you for sharing your experiences, I hope your blog will help the main population and immigrants understand each other and lessen the hostility! I would personally be very intrested in hearing your opinion on the possibilities to integrate asylum seekers (including women and children) through sports!

Hopefully things will turn out fine for you in Finland. You may need some initial patience, but sooner or later you will realize that you are one of us and that others also will perceive you that way. Good luck and keep writing about your experiences. I will certainly read.

Hi Ammar, I think it is very nice that you are writing a blog in my newspaper Hufvudstadsbladet. I hope you will have a good language course because the language is absolutely the first thing to learn. Then you can go on with a Master. I work as a German teacher for immigrants in Germany. I hope that you will find a lot of nice people who will be your friends. Regards and a Happy New Year 😊 Heidi

    Hi!
Welcome to Finland, We need more people in this country, it is one of the biggest countries in europe with one of the smallest populations.

Learning the language is definitely the most important thing.

Sorry about the internethaters, it is a part of finnish culture for some people to hate loudly on the internet…

    ONNEA MATKALLE!

    Hyvää päivää, Ammar,
congratulations with residence permit. I think that with engineering diploma you have good chances for a job, but you need Finnish language anyway.
Dialogue between locals and immigrants is very important (especially now after Köln events), so your blog is a very good idea.
Would be useful if you could tell about your experience in the camp and waiting time. Did you have language courses from state or volunteers or learned yourself?

    Hi Ammar!

I wish you all the best in Finland and that you and other immigrants are, and will be well treated! I can be sad about how the Finland-Swedes are treated in this country so I know it might be difficult sometimes being from another culture.

Take care and keep up the positive attitude 🙂

    All the best,
    Sara
